Bitter gourd is well, bitter; but when the bitter gourd in the garden bore its first fruit, there was surprise more than joy. The seed sown had come from the bitter gourd that had been bought from the market. The fruit was definitely big, about a feet long; yet the one harvested was small, about four inches, way far out of expectation. Then, I learn there are big and small bitter gourds. The Chinese variety is bigger than the Indian variety. The Chinese variety is over half a feet, reaching almost one feet normally while the Indian variety barely reaches half a feet; usually 3 to 4 inches long. I still don't know how the Indian variety ended up in the garden; but I do suspect the birds...
