Day 9 of Chinese New Year as usual ended with a bang. While midnight signals the time for Cinderella to leave the ball, it signals the Hokkiens to Bai Tian Gong, pray to and thank the Jade Emperor that is; for avoiding a calamity aeons ago. Sugarcanes are a must for this occasion; in commemoration of the events when the people hid in a field of sugarcane from invading marauders and fed their hungry children with sugarcane juice.
