The papaya tree in the garden has flowered and little papayas now adorn it like a crown! Papaya trees are rather common sights in Malaysian gardens that it is easy to forget that they are not native to the country. In fact, they are native to tropical America. Papaya trees originate from southern Mexico and Central America. Spaniards introduced papaya to the Old World in the 16th century. In looking for new lands, resources, and to spread Christianity; the Spainiards had attacked and conquered the Aztecs in 1521; and went on to colonize Mexico for the next 300 years.
