Plumeria, otherwise known as frangipani, is a flower full of irony. In Malaysia as well as in the Philippines and Indonesia, it is common to see it planted in cemeteries; the plant being a graveyard flower which is associated with ghosts and demons, providing shelter to them according to local folk beliefs. Yet, one could not disregard it as a popular ornamental plant which is planted in other places where spaces allow it, including private homes and public places like the park or parking lot. Hindus have also been known to offer frangipani in temples and the flower had a high place in Mayan culture, here being associated with deities instead of ghosts and demons and they represent life and fertility.
