A Solitary Life

In a night market, I came across a woman selling Siamese fighting fish Betta splendens. The fish were kept each in small glass bottles and a piece of cardboard was placed between each bottle. Needless to say, that was because the fish especially the males fight at the sight of each other. If kept in the same bottle or aquarium, the males especially will even fight to the death. The fish most probably live a solitary hermit life in their natural habitat in the Mekong basin of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. In an artificial environment, the male and female fighting fish are normally only kept together  temporarily to breed.
