I don't really know when the fig was introduced to the Malaysian market but it must be around these few years. And then, they are expensive and available mostly in big cities like Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh or Penang but definitely not in Taiping. The plants are native to the Middle East and western Asia but now are widely grown throughout the world for their sweet fruits and for ornamental purposes. I can't imagine how ornamental the plants could be except to cover the private parts of Adam and Eve. Locally, the saplings don't come cheap and at RM 50, I thought that was a bargain. The plant that I bought just bore one fruit so far. It has been months since then and I have yet to see it flower.
