Two little pineapples in the garden by the drain reared their pretty red heads as if to welcome the Chinese New Year. Pineapples are important items during the festive season. The Hokkien term for pineapples ong lai literally means fortune comes; an auspicious term no doubt. The spiky fruits are thus a common sight during Chinese New Year and are offered to the Chinese Gods during prayers.
