Sometimes when on a walk in the Lake Gardens, the air would suddenly become very fragrant. Nearby, there would be a very big tree with big blooming pinkish red flowers on its trunk. Equally eye-catching would be the fruits which are round and brown. The fruits have woody shells. The diameters of the fruits can come up to 25 cm and they remind of canonballs. It is not surprising then that the Couroupita guianensis is also called the cannonball tree. The fragrance in the air came from the strong scent of the flowers.
