Just the other day, a friend said it's the durian season now in Batu Kurau. The little town some 30 km away is famous for the fruit but these days, there are new varieties like the famous Musang King and others with fanciful names such as Red Prawn, Golden Phoenix, Black Thorn, XO, D24, D101 etc from other places. There are all together 200 registered varieties as of 2021. Durian vendors are already operating in town but there were not many durians in sight when my nephew and I dropped by. The vendor said the durian trees in Batu Kurau aren't bearing any fruits yet and the fruits on sale are from the state of Pahang. My nephew settled for D24 and D101 even though they were as pricey as in Kuala Lumpur.
Which is which? D24 is pale yellow with a bitter taste and a sweet and slightly alcoholic aftertaste while D101 is orange and tasted sweet and creamy.
