High Hopes

Some plants flower and when they do so profusely, they don't just fill you with delights but with hope as well; hope for a bountiful harvest, that is. Just like this remnants from Chinese New Year, the Citrus japonica, kumquats from the family, When the plant was first brought home from the nursery to usher in good luck during Chinese New Year, its round golden fruits were aplenty. The fruits surprisingly remained on the plant for months. Then for months after they dropped off, the plant was just a barren green despite being fed fertilizers.  Then, out of the blue, white flowers started to appear and I couldn't help but started to count the kumquats that had yet to be. After all, a kumquat tree reportedly  can produce hundreds or even thousands of fruits each year. That of course didn't materialise and I'm left  wondering why.
