I Am Not A Peafowl!

Now, don't mistake me for a peahen. My female counterpart, the peafowl is either brown or toned grey and brown. Me? During courtship, I will display my brilliant tail. Many of the brilliant colours of my plumage are due to an optical interference phenomenon (Bragg reflection) based on (nearly) periodic nanostructures found in the barbules (fiber-like components) of the feathers. Fantastic, don't you think?

And I knew only some days ago that they have these beautiful tail only for the period of love and than they lost it. And didn't knew it's an optical illusion too.
