I remember there was much hype about Bette Midler when her debut movie The Rose came out in 1979. Back then, I had thought that she wasn't very pretty but then she was highly talented. She had won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her role in the movie which is said to be loosely based on the life of singer Janis Joplin; and popularised the song which plays during the movie's closing credits. I love especially her 1990 cover of Nanci Griffith's 1987 song.
