What do you think of when someone mentions the word cannonball? Most would think of the round solid missile which is fired from a cannon.Then, movie buffs may think of the 1981 American- Hong Kong hit, Cannonball Run, the movie that stars a host of stars like the late Roger Moore, the late Burt Reynold, the late Farrah Fawcett and Hong Kong stars, Jackie Chan and Michael Hui. Who would think of the cannonball tree, the deciduous tree originally from the rainforests of Central and South America? The tree of course is notable for its large, spherical woody fruit, which reminds of a rusty cannonball. There is such a tree in Taiping Lake Garden but I remember first seeing it in Penang Botanical Garden.
